WALTER E. WASHINGTON CONVENTION CENTER
Washington, D.C.
Organized within the historic L’Enfant Plan grid of Washington, D.C., the Washington Convention Center is conceived as a series of connected buildings that preserve the continuity of the city’s street network while introducing a large-scale civic destination into the urban fabric. Two public streets pass through the complex, maintaining permeability and reinforcing the rhythm of the surrounding neighborhood. Generous glazing and strategically placed concourses, registration areas, and perimeter lobbies bring daylight deep into the interior and reveal interior activity to the city beyond, strengthening the relationship between interior and exterior while keeping the building visually active along its street edges.
Upon arrival, guests enter through a prominent atrium fronting the Carnegie Library, establishing a clear civic gateway into the convention center. Inside, a network of concourses and gathering spaces organizes circulation between exhibition halls, meeting rooms, and event areas, designed to accommodate large volumes of visitors while maintaining clarity, orientation, and ease of movement across the complex. As the largest building in Washington, D.C., the convention center has reestablished the city’s position as a premier destination for meetings and events, while supporting new economic activity and development within the surrounding downtown district.
